How to Look Better in Jeans

Forget the fitting room—the only way to really know how good a pair of jeans looks on you is to wear them. Out of a store. Road test them in daylight, nightlife and see how they stand up to a whole month of your real life. If they sag, bag or just don't give you the butt you deserve, try something else from our collection of 30+ premium denim brands. Here's what to consider...

The Rise

Important for everyone, but especially key for curves. Think about rise in terms of your belly button:

Want to show it off? A 5-8" low rise sits a few inches below it.
Want to underline it? A 8-9" mid rise sits an inch or so below it.
Want to reach it? A 10"-and-up high rise reaches or covers it.

The Inseam

How long would you like your legs to look? Choose the most elongating fit for your height:

If you're 5'4" or under: Cropped or ankle-length jeans lengthen legs.
If you're 5'4"-5'8": Congrats—you can wear pretty much any inseam.
If you're 5'9 and up: Steer clear of anything overly cropped.

The Pockets

The difference between a nice butt and a "nice butt."

Wider bum? Try back pockets placed close to the center seam.
No booty? Low-set flap pockets create the illusion of curves.
Saggy bottom? High pocket placement gives it instant lift.

Pocket proportions and butt proportions should line up— big pockets on a small bum and teeny pockets on a generous bottom are just going to look off.

The Fabric

Rigid or stretch denim? Consider content when choosing size.

Stretch denim: Take your usual size if you see elastane, Spandex or Lycra in the fabric content. These synthetic fibers allow jeans to move and grow with you.
Rigid denim: 100% cotton denim is referred to as rigid. It has zero give and is significantly more snug than stretch denim. Go up 1-2 sizes from your usual size.
