As the Accessories Editor at Mademoiselle, Kate Brosnahan Spade was frustrated she couldn't find the fashionable, utilitarian handbag she wanted and started designing her own version out of colorful construction paper in her NYC apartment. What began as an after-work art project quickly spun into an accessories revolution and now an international fashion behometh—with sweaters, blouses and pants just as colorful as Spade's first paper purse.
